Log construction
Building by carving whole trees is a traditional Finnish way to make durable, cozy, and functional homes. These same age-old carving skills have been preserved to this day. Modern carving work is also based on these proven methods.
In the past, logs were processed entirely by manual labor from start to finish; today, alongside traditional hand tools, our hand-carving process also utilizes battery- and motor-powered tools. However, our carving is still carried out as a craft by skilled artisans.
Almost anything can be built from logs, but we specialize in log houses, log cabins, and log saunas. It is a joy to build with authentic Finnish logs. We have the skills to make your specific dream come true!

Why choose log construction?
Healthy indoor air
Wood is a premium building material provided by nature that naturally balances indoor air humidity. In a hand-carved log structure, you breathe clean and fresh air regardless of the season. Therefore, log construction made from glue-free Finnish wood species and ecological insulation is a safe choice also for allergy sufferers and quality-conscious builders.
We carve our products from Finnish pine, spruce, or aspen. We use sheep wool or flax products as insulation between the logs, both of which are completely natural and support the breathability of the structure.
Energy-efficient carbon sink
Log construction utilizes a renewable natural resource that binds carbon dioxide throughout its lifecycle. Carbon dioxide bound to the wood during its growth phase remains inside the log and is not released into the atmosphere. By choosing a hand-carved log structure, you are therefore making a concrete environmental act. A hand-carved log building consumes very little energy during the manufacturing phase, and studies show its carbon footprint is significantly smaller than that of industrially manufactured buildings.
Our company has participated in a study determining the carbon footprint of a hand-carved log building. The results can be viewed on the co2data.fi website using the search term "käsinveistetty hirsi". A professionally carved log wall is tight and energy-efficient: it keeps the heat inside during the winter and stays pleasantly cool during the summer heat.
A beautiful and calming whole
The foundation of well-being is balance, and hand-carved log construction offers a counterbalance to today's busy lifestyle. Natural materials provide an environment that supports well-being and a sense of permanence – a log building provides roots for life.
The natural shapes of the wood and the traditional craftsmanship of the carvers work together to create a calming and aesthetic whole. A tight and richly textured log wall is a joy to the eye and creates a unique atmosphere in the space.
Lasting value and responsibility
Log construction is designed to last from generation to generation. The longevity of the structures guarantees an excellent resale value for the building, making it a sustainable investment for the future. Log construction is a choice where residents get an environment that aligns with their values.
Oiku's log construction is a responsible act, as our operations support biodiversity, cherish traditional building methods, and fully utilize the wood material harvested from the forest. A functioning circular economy is an essential part of every meter of log we carve.
