Log homes

The warmth of authentic wood, handcrafted

Oiku combines traditional log construction and the requirements of modern living into a functional home. We build homes that breathe in the same rhythm with nature and their residents. A traditional hand-carved log house is made to last from generation to generation.

A hand-carved log house updated for the modern era

Forget the images of dark and heavy log cabins where the wind seeps into the room through the corners. A modern log house allows for both light and warmth in your home. Careful planning and craftsmanship guarantee good thermal efficiency, and with the right solutions, light can flood in even through large windows.

Your building will be completely unique, because through natural hand-carving, the characteristics and shapes of each log are preserved and visible in the wall. Simply put, a hand-carved log house means that the building is constructed by fitting naturally shaped, peeled logs or timbers on top of each other. Although today new electric and combustion engine-powered tools have replaced axes, adzes, and chisels in many stages of the process, it is still a craft, as the carver's experience and skill remain the most important factors influencing the success of the construction. Selecting trees suitable for carving from the forest, as well as sawing and drying the wood, are also important areas that require professional skill.

Oiku log homes represent a new era of log construction, where professionally handcrafted carving work and the warmth of authentic wood combine into a unique whole.

This is how a good log house is born – High-quality, domestic, and responsible log construction

Quality is the most important thing to us, and we are committed to it. The quality of log construction comes from selecting the right kinds of trees, careful planning, the professionalism of the carvers, and good working conditions. Good cooperation with the customer guarantees quality, and we have succeeded in this. "Oh, how great it turned out" – is a familiar phrase from our customers' lips after seeing the end result. Naturally, our products also meet the RunkoRyl quality requirements defined for construction.

Using Finnish materials is a matter of course for us. Our goal is to source the trees to be sawn into logs from as close to our location in Northern Ostrobothnia as possible. We are doing our part to support Finnish labor and especially its log carving traditions. Although traditions are still respected in log houses, in the hands of our skilled professionals, logs are a material from which it is possible to build modern, personal, and unique buildings.

Building a house from whole trees, instead of pieces glued together, is highly responsible and supports sustainable development. We do responsible work, building from authentic wood and in a natural way. It has lasted in the past, and it will last in the future!

Why build a log house?

Healthy indoor air

Wood is a building material provided by nature that balances indoor air humidity. In an Oiku home carved from whole logs, you breathe clean, fresh air regardless of the season. Therefore, a log house built from glue-free Finnish wood species and ecological insulation is a safe choice also for allergy sufferers and the quality-conscious. We carve our products from Finnish pine, spruce, or aspen. We use sheep wool or flax products as insulation between the logs, both of which are natural products.

Energy-efficient carbon sink

Wood is a renewable natural resource that binds carbon dioxide throughout its lifecycle. The carbon dioxide bound by the tree during its growth phase remains inside the wood in the log and is not released into the atmosphere. By choosing a log house made of whole trees, you are making a concrete environmental act. A hand-carved log house consumes little energy, and its carbon footprint can be calculated according to modern standards. Studies show that the carbon footprint is significantly smaller for hand-carved log buildings than for industrially manufactured ones. Our company has participated in a study determining the carbon footprint of a hand-carved log building. The results of the study can be viewed on the co2data.fi website using the search term "käsinveistetty hirsi".

A professionally carved log wall is tight and energy-efficient, keeping the heat inside during winter and staying pleasantly cool in summer. In an Oiku house, the wind does not blow in through the corners.

Beautiful to look at

The foundation of well-being is balance in life. A hand-carved log house gives you the opportunity to pause as a counterbalance to today's busy life. Nature comes close to you to support your well-being - you gain roots for your life.

The natural shapes and characteristics of the wood, along with the craftsmanship of the carvers, create a calming combination. The log wall of an Oiku home is tight and beautiful to look at.

Lasting value

A hand-carved log house is designed to last from generation to generation. The longevity of a log house guarantees an excellent resale value for the building. A log house is therefore an investment in the future, in addition to the residents getting a home that aligns with their values. An Oiku log house is a responsible choice, as our company's operations support biodiversity, cherish traditions, and fully utilize all material from the trees harvested from the forest. A functioning circular economy is an essential part of our operating principle.

Log house construction – This is how an Oiku house is born

1.

Planning

We create custom solutions according to your needs. The starting point for high-quality construction is always careful planning. In cooperation with you, we go through the house plans, determine the suitable delivery contents, and dream together about your new house.

2.

LOG PROCUREMENT AND PREPARATION

After the house drawings, planning continues with calculating the number of logs, selecting the right kinds of trees, and preparing the logs. The selected trees are purchased directly from forest owners, favoring continuous cover forests. This way, we ensure quality and continuity. At our carving yard, the logs are sawn, numbered, and dried in a kiln, after which the actual carving work can begin.

3.

CARVING WORK

Domestic, ultra-precise craftsmanship guarantees a high-quality result. Our carvers scribe the natural shapes of the lower log onto the upper log, one log at a time. Between the scribed lines, a groove is shaped for insulation, and the log is lowered tightly onto the log below. Through the meticulous skill of our professional carvers, we achieve what we always strive for – a tight and warm wall.

This is how the wall is built log by log by hand. Once the walls are finished, the window and door openings are sawn to their final size. For carving a hand-carved log home, we typically reserve about 3–4 months (130 m²), depending on the model of the building and the desired details.

4.

FINISHING AND ASSEMBLY

As part of our quality assurance, the logs are cleaned and finished according to the customer's wishes, either by planing or hewing (by hand or machine). The building's logs are numbered so that assembly at the site proceeds swiftly. The insulation between the logs is fixed in place, and the logs are packed for transport. On-site, the work usually takes a few days with the help of a crane.

Our experienced professionals work with skill and speed at every stage. The raising of your log home frame is a smooth process—and the dream of a log house on your own lot becomes a reality!
